Reading: Math Tutoring

A good math tutor can help your child because he or she will tailor learning to your childs personality and level of understanding. The tutor starts where your child is at and not where the book is. Oftentimes, teachers teach information and tutors teach students. Keep in mind, it is difficult for a teacher to provide the one-on-one time needed by some students because of all of the other students he or she is responsible for.

Math tutors can work with the student until the student understands the math principle being taught instead of keeping up with a lesson plan schedule. The tutor can also ascertain when the student can apply the principle correctly before moving on to the next area. Many times, math builds on previous principles, and it is important to make sure the first principle is understood completely before moving on to the next principle.

Using a Tutoring Organization
Many different educational tutoring centers have been created and can be a great place to go for help with math or other subjects. These centers hire tutors who work 15 to 20 hours per week (or more) at the center. Some centers work with individual students and some work with small groups of students.

Some tutoring centers provide all of the materials needed to learn grade level appropriate math skills. The tutors in most centers are not interested in helping students with homework but in teaching educational skills. After the appropriate skills are learned, the student can do his or her homework without help. Many centers provide teachers who have degrees in a particular area, and thus are credentialed and experienced.
